Inspiration 〰️
Whether you are just starting out in the industry, or a seasoned pro, finding inspiration is key to learning and progressing.
Lindsay Adler has always been a huge inspiration to me and I love how she creates concepts and executes extraordinary images that get noticed, shared and appreciated.
The image below was inspired by images in Lindsay Adler’s Hair gallery
The way Lindsay uses lighting is effortless. She has perfected her craft through years of trial and error and is a true master! I love the fact she continues to test out new ways to be innovative and push the boundaries. For this beauty shoot, I had minimal equipment and space and not a lot of time, so wanted to do something that wasn’t complicated but still had an impact.
I loved the way Lindsay framed her subjects in the Hair Gallery, but also how they seemed simple, yet bold. I used a black backdrop but positioned a light with a red gel behind to give a warm colouring behind the model. I then lit the models face with one single beauty dish, slightly off to the right hand side, to create some shadows, give a 3 dimensional feel and add drama. I positioned the model side on to the camera to create a nice curve through her arm and shoulder to draw in the viewer. I love how it turned out, although, if I were to re-do this shot again, I may add a third light to illuminate more of the models hair.
This image was the final edit and was featured as the front cover for Digital Photography Magazine, Australia (image below). They (of course) cropped it to accommodate the magazine and text space, but it works equally as well.
Taking inspiration from other photographers is key to trying new techniques, angles and lighting, and in doing so, every step you learn more about yourself and what you like and don’t like. There are so many learning platforms available now, that it makes it even easier to see how your favourite photographer shoots. When I first started out in photography, I signed up to KelbyOne which is where I first discovered Lindsay Adler, along with a host of other incredible photographers and educators. In fact, I’m still a member because the collective wealth of information on there is mind-blowing! Lindsay Adler is now also doing her own education platform, for those specifically interested in portraiture and creative lighting.
There were lots of other images from the day and although they didn’t end up in the final selection, there was something about this one (above) that kept me coming back to it. I feel like there’s an air of mystery about the model. What do you think?
I’d love to see your final photo’s and the inspiration behind them! Feel free to send to my Instagram!
